Overland Expedition with rooftop tents: “Transylvanian Skies 2025” – 6 fantastic days and nights from 6th to 11th July 2025!

If there’s even a little bit of the traveler and adventurer in you, it is inconceivable that Romania could leave you indifferent. We invite you to experience Transylvania and spend your nights in the mountains surrounded by nature. If you do not have your own rooftop tent, you can rent it from us!

Romania offers a magical mix of history and modernity, mountains, castles, huts, animals and carts on the road, cross country routes, uranium and salt mines, abandoned railway stations and tunnels, ancient towns, spectacular countryside sights, authentic rural life and more… and more… But above all – a sense of vastness and freedom. And that’s exactly what we would most like you to experience and feel during our 6 day Romanian 4×4 excursion “Transylvanian Skies”, created by our company, “4×4 Centrs”.

We have found, in our opinion, the most interesting locations and mountain roads for you to visit in order to feel the unique flavour of Romania. If this trip will make you want to return here again and again, we will feel that our mission is complete!

One of the main features of the 4×4 tour “Transylvanian skies” will be mountain roads and mountain passes. Fantastic sights, vast expanses and wild nature – all of it for you to see and feel.

“Transylvanian Skies 2025” Mountain camping – when, where and how

The 4×4 expedition/mountain camping “Transylvanian Skies 2025″ is a 6 day expedition that will take place from 6^th to 11^th July 2025.
In order to successfully navigate the expedition route, you will need an off-road vehicle with low gear, transmission protection and mud or AT tires. The size of the wheels and the winch equipment is not important.

• Vehicles: we recommend off-road vehicles with rooftop tents that have been suitably prepared for the expedition.
• Maximum number of vehicles: 8. We all drive together as a group – one after another. The organizer will provide walkie-talkies for all the cars.  
• Route: highways, roads, mountain roads, off-road terrain. Approximate total length of the route in Romania: 1100 km.
• Each day will include a stop at a store and a filling station.
• Along the way we will visit many interesting locations (see below).
• We well spend the nights in the mountains; one of the nights we could stay at a hotel or a paid camping location with showers.
• Lunch every day: picnic in nature (or a café, if we pass by one).
• Breakfast and supper – to be arranged individually.
• The expedition will be led by the creator of the route, Edvīns Bauers (4×4 Centrs).

The maximum number of cars on a trip – 8. Don’t delay applying!

The expedition program:

Day 1: Oradea – Bradu (~200km)
11:30 We meet up in Oradea (RO). Each participant can choose their own route and method for arriving at the starting point. We can help out with hotel reservations.
The most important elements for the day’s program: an off-road trip through the Bihor mountain range, reaching the summit (1840m), picnic in the mountains, ride over the ancient railroad bridge and through the tunnel.
Day 2: Bradu – Deva – Petroșani (~220 km)
The day’s program: visiting the Corvin Castle, the “Vulcan” mountain pass, the Densus church (13^th century), a small but gorgeous ravine.
Day 3: Petroșani – Targu Jiu – Orșova (~160 km)
The day’s program: a fantastically beautiful road along the Danube, the “Iron gates” (20 minute climb on foot) and/or a hike through a large, wild cave with an exit at the Danube river (1 hour altogether), the impressive Decebal mountain sculpture, a beautiful off-road route through the lower mountains (~600 m above sea level).
Day 4: Orșova – Transalpina mountain pass (~170km)
The day’s program: Baile Herculane spa, an old watermill, the Devil’s Bridge, picnic at a mountain river, the Transalpina mountain pass (the highest road in Romania, 2145 m above sea level). We think that the Transalpina is more impressive than the popular Transfăgărășan mountain pass.
Day 5: Transalpina – Sibiu – Mediaș (~170km)
The day’s program and the culmination of the trip: the Strategica mountain (off-)road, picnic in the mountains. Visiting the ancient Sibiu town, shops, etc.
Day 6: Mediaș – Turda (~150km)
The day’s program: a beautiful off-road route through the lower mountains, an old church/fortress, river fords, the Salina Turda salt mines (optional). Tour finishing at around 5 pm.

Equipment – required and optional

Required:

• Passport or ID card!
• Vehicle documents, OCTA (insurance)
• 4×4 off-road vehicle with AT/MT tires and low gears
• Everything required for living and spending nights in nature
• Ability to use off-line navigation on the phone or tablet if necessary (maps.me etc.)

Optional but recommended:
Clothing and shoes suited for the weather, off-road driving accessories, as well as food for lunch breaks in nature.

Applying and participation fee for 6 days

The participation fee covers the following:

• A special route developed for a 4×4 expedition
• Route organization and guiding with 4×4 Centrs vehicle and guide
• spending 1 night in a camping site with showers and other facilities
• walkie-talkie in the car

The participation fee for a single vehicle – after filling out the on-line application form and making an advance payment within five days of filling out the form in the amount of 350 EUR to the account indicated below:

• if applying before 01.03. – 1090 EUR per vehicle.
• if applying in the period from 01.03. to 20.05. – 1190 EUR per vehicle.
• if applying after 20.05. – 1290 EUR per vehicle.

The remaining participation fee must be paid no later than 30 days before the trip..

In order to ensure a high-quality event, the number of participants is limited – no more than 8 vehicles! The minimum number of vehicles for the expedition is 4.
